A license from this administration ensures that companies abide to the mandate and rules and regulations of the POEA itself. Licensing also means that there are non-POEA licensed recruitment companies in the Philippines, and these firms without a license are also without definite rules, regulations, and mandates. The danger is most especially evident when non-POEA licensed recruitment companies in the Philippines abuse their clients and the nurses that they recruit. According to studies by the Honor Society of Nursing, about half of the current registered nurse workforce will be in the retirement age in the next 15 years. This is not good for the country as it is experiencing a nursing shortage that could leave 500,000 to 800,000 vacant positions for nurses by 2020. With America’s nursing schools producing only less than 70,000 new nurses a year and with nurses rapidly leaving the nursing profession due to the work environment, the 800,000 vacancy is a tall order for America’s healthcare industry. Even enrollment in nursing schools has steadily dropped since 2000, so the figures will not be any better anytime soon. In addition, the average age of nursing graduate is 31, which means the new graduates have fewer years to work. If a 31-year-old nurse enters the work force now, he or she will not even be in the business by 2020, hence the void of the nursing shortage will be deeper and much more difficult to fill. Because of this, the country has depended on overseas nurse recruitment companies to help the country with its problem in the medical industry. Read the rest of this entry »
