As expected, the impact of the nursing shortage in America will intensify in the coming years. According to the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses by the Division of Nursing in the Bureau of Health Professions, the average age of the nurses in the medical industry in 2000 is 43.3. This figure is higher compared to the average age of nurses in 1996, which could be an indicator that the average age of nurses now is higher than 43.3. This is a possibility, as another study states that the average age of nursing graduates from nursing schools in America is 31, which means that the new nurses today will have less time to serve the medical workforce. In the same survey, it was revealed that the population of registered nurses under the age of 30 has dropped from 25.1 percent in 1980 to 9.1 percent in 2000. In a report released by the Government Accounting Office, a survey indicated that by 2010, 40 percent of all registered nurses in America will be older than 50. There are not enough new registered nurses to enter the workforce. Again, according to the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses, the total population of nurses has been growing at the slowest rate in 20 years. Read the rest of this entry »

While it cannot fully solve the problem of nurse shortage in the country, getting the services of nurse recruitment companies is a good alternative, which can address the problem if done with other strategies. Several medical and healthcare industry experts support the placing of foreign-trained nurses employed through nurse recruitment companies as long as the nurses from these nurse recruitment companies are highly qualified and can address properly the concerns of the work environment in America. These concerns have basis since studies have proven that the image of nursing and the work climate in healthcare facilities are some of the reasons of the nursing shortage. Also, these experts have agreed that that while nurses from other countries have the right to migrate and look for employment elsewhere, nurse recruitment companies should also acknowledge the effects of migration to the nurse’s home country. This is according to the International Council of Nurses (ICN), who has reported that some countries have been affected negatively due to the migration of nurses. According to the ICN’s report, the shortage of America should not affect other countries. Read the rest of this entry »

It is already difficult to be a nurse, and it is definitely more difficult to be a nurse in a foreign country. Nurse recruitment agencies acknowledge this when they get nurses that will be sent to countries such as Canada, the Middle East, and especially the United States, which has a pronounced need of nurses due to their shortage of medical staff. While there is a shortage of nurses in America, it does not mean that their healthcare facilities will be willing to take anyone for their staff. Part of America’s problem is the lack of trained nurses, since their new graduates in nursing school are not qualified and skilled enough to handle the workload of hospitals and other medical and healthcare facilities in the country. Therefore, when healthcare facilities get foreign-trained nurses from nurse recruitment agencies, they have to make sure that nurses can meet their standards. After all, getting nurses from nurse recruitment agencies is more costly, so the healthcare facilities should get their money’s worth. Read the rest of this entry »

Studies show that besides the increase of the nurses’ workload, the nursing shortage also has other adverse effects in the medical industry of America. The shortage of nurses has forced hospitals in America to hire ill-experienced nurses. However, according to the Journal of American Medical Association, surgical patients have a better survival advantage if treated in hospitals with experienced nurses. Patients treated by inexperienced nurses are at risk of failure of rescue and death by five percent. Also, in a survey by the New England Journal of Medicine, 53 percent of physicians, 42 percent of the public, and more than one third of United States doctors reported to have experienced medical errors due to the shortage of nurses in America. Both the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Health Care at the Crossroads: Strategies for Addressing the Evolving Nursing Crisis report by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations agreed that the lack of nurses in America’s hospitals is endangering the lives of patients, while the New England Journal of Medicine linked the hours of care by nurses to the outcomes for hospitalized patients. Other publications have reported that the nursing shortage has forced hospitals to stop operations and even reject patients. Read the rest of this entry »

Nurse recruitment has been a major problem for the healthcare industry in America. The country has not been producing enough nurses to address the industry’s needs. And while there are thousands of graduates from nursing schools all over the country, it is not enough to fill the country’s needs for highly-skilled registered nurses. Even scholarly research from various universities, such as the study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing in the Ohio State University states that while the country previously experienced a problem in nurse recruitment in the past, the current shortage of nurses is unlike the past shortages experienced. Foreign nurse recruiting has been a common practice in America due to the recent shortage of nurses in the healthcare industry. Currently, its own nurses are not enough to address the needs of the healthcare industry when it comes to registered nurses. This is why healthcare facilities have opted to hire foreign-trained nurses. Some facilities, however, have doubts when it comes to foreign nurse recruiting, citing that foreigners may not have the capacity to properly work in the healthcare industry of America, given that it has a reputation for being harsh. These doubts in foreign nurse recruiting are unfounded, as foreign-based nurses from foreign nurse recruiting are as qualified as US-trained nurses. In fact, there are countries like the Philippines that are known for having a good reputation as a service nation, because of their good background in several industries. One of these industries is the medical industry. Because of this, the Philippines has become the number one provider of nurses in the United States. Even other countries such as the Middle East, Canada, and the United Kingdom trust the capacity of Filipino nurses. Read the rest of this entry »

Nursing has turned into a big industry in the Philippines. It is currently the most popular college degree in the Philippines and there are more than 350 colleges offering nursing courses in the country. The Philippines produces more than enough nurses to support its healthcare industry. An advisory released by the World Health Organization cites that a nurse recruiter in the Philippines or elsewhere in the world should not get nurses from countries with nursing shortages. This has been the problem of countries like Africa, which currently has half of the world’ disease burden yet does not have enough healthcare workers to deal with the crisis. This is why a nurse recruiter in the Philippines and anywhere in the world should avoid travelling nurses from such countries and focus their attention elsewhere, in countries where there is no nursing shortage. A nurse recruiter in the Philippines and elsewhere should also consider the status of a nurse’s country home, as said by the World Health Organization and the International Council of Nursing, since healthcare professionals should always consider the status of their country first.
